Study Aboard with a Student Visa

Student Visas are of two forms : The F-1 Visa commonly known as  Academic Student Visa, is for international students enrolled in accredited college, university, seminary,  or other academic institution in the United States.

Also there is M-1 Visa, known as the Vocational Student Visa, this is for students enrolled in vocational or other nonacademic programs in the United States

M1 and  F1 Visa Details

F-1 students must complete their studies by the expiration date listed on their I-20 form, which means that their visa permits them to stay in the US only for the duration of their academic program. In certain cases, F-1 students may be eligible for off-campus work authorization in situations of severe economic hardship or special student relief.

M-1 students, however, are allowed to participate in practical training only after completing their studies. For both F-1 and M-1 students, any off-campus employment must be directly related to their field of study and must receive prior authorization from both the Designated School Official (the person responsible for managing SEVIS) and USCIS.

In general, only noncitizens with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) authorization to work are eligible to apply for a Social Security number
